Drop-in Class Frequently Asked Questions:
What happens in a class?
The teacher will welcome everyone and introduce the class. A short, optional prayer is played to help us to prepare our mind, or you can just sit quietly and gather your thoughts. This is followed by a short breathing meditation to help everyone chill out and reduce distractions, and then a practical teaching on how we can apply meditation to our daily lives. This teaching forms the basis for our second guided meditation which is followed by refreshments* and an opportunity to discuss the class and to ask questions.
The videos here will give you some idea of what to expect, but if you have any questions, please call or email us.
*Refreshments are included in the class fee.
Do I have to be Buddhist to attend?
Not at all, most people who attend our classes aren't. We have people from all walks of life attending, from truck drivers to doctors. Some people go on to study in more depth, but everyone finds practical tools for improving their experience in daily life. All our drop-in classes are suitable for complete beginners.
Do I need to book?
No. Just turn up five minutes or so before the start of the class. Though if you're late don't worry, just come in and find a seat. if you're late to a class at JLC then please don't be afraid to ring the door bell, this is quite normal and no one will mind.
Do I have to start at the beginning of a series?
No. These classes run year 'round with breaks roughly in accordance with school holidays. Classes are specifically designed so anyone, even complete beginners, can join at any point and get into the swing of things.
Do I need any special clothing?
No. Most people choose to sit on chairs, though we do have cushions available at our Cradley Heath venue, and you are welcome to bring your own cushion to our classes at hired venues if you prefer. There is no physical exercise as part of our classes.
